Speechlabel, audio labels increasing everyday accessibility

A mobile app with voice-activated object labelling to support blind and visually impaired independence  

Speechlabel is an assistive technology project designed to help people with visual impairments identify and organise the physical items in their environment using spoken, custom audio labels. Through the associated mobile application, users can create an audio description for objects by recording their own voice or adding text that is then played back when the item is scanned. The system supports scanning through the device’s camera or near-field communication (NFC) capabilities, allowing a smartphone or tablet to instantly read a label and announce its contents aloud to the user. Labels can be attached to common objects such as pantry containers, medication bottles, clothing, documents, appliances, or personal belongings.  

The underlying goal of Speechlabel is to enhance orientation and autonomy in everyday household and personal contexts. By having this audio information, the tool reduces reliance on memory, sighted assistance, or guesswork when interacting with objects. Users can create unlimited labels stored in the cloud, and they have the flexibility to re-record and update information as needed. The app’s design intentionally avoids over-dependence on artificial intelligence inference; instead, it emphasises user-generated audio content that precisely reflects the user’s intent and personal organisation system.  

Hable acquired the original Speechlabel project and integrated it into its accessibility portfolio, extending support, interface improvements and broader availability beyond its initial local reach.

A remote, television-based community service to reduce loneliness and promote well-being among older adults 

Casal TV is an inclusive digital service designed to bring community engagement, structured activities and social interaction into the homes of older adults, particularly those experiencing isolation or mobility limitations. The project uses everyday technology, a television connected with a simple device, to create a virtual “social centre” that older participants can access easily without requiring advanced technological skills or a computer.

Through Casal TV, users can take part in live daily sessions that mirror the range of activities offered in traditional day centres. These sessions are facilitated by professionals in socio-cultural animation and psychology and include physical exercise classes such as yoga, tai chi and stretching, cognitive stimulation workshops, memory and game sessions, creative and cultural programmes (music, theatre, arts), and social celebration events that invite participation and mutual engagement.

The core objective of Casal TV is to improve the physical, emotional and cognitive health of older adults while combating unwanted loneliness. The platform places special emphasis on accessibility: an intuitive setup process involving a MiniPC, webcam, and remote control transforms the television into an interactive hub where individuals connect in real time with peers and facilitators throughout the day.

Participants have reported that the service not only helps structure their daily routines but also fosters meaningful human connection and support. Family members often indicate increased peace of mind knowing their relatives are engaging with a supportive community. Casal TV exemplifies how digital tools can be applied in the social-care ecosystem to enhance inclusion and quality of life for older people.

An interactive digital tool to help children understand and navigate the Barnahus process

The Barnahus Network provides integrated, child‑friendly services to children who are victims or witnesses of violence. Under the Barnahus model, children receive coordinated support, from social services, medical and mental‑health care, legal and justice professionals, under one roof. This multidisciplinary approach reduces the risk of re‑traumatisation by avoiding repeated interviews and ensuring a safe environment.

The Journeys App is a tool developed to make this process more accessible and understandable for children. It offers an interactive 3‑D tour of a typical Barnahus facility, allowing children to familiarise themselves with the space before visiting. It also provides a personalised “walk‑through” of the steps they will go through during their case, adapted to the child’s location and individual situation, helping them understand what will happen and when. In addition, the app includes a simple breathing‑exercise game, meant as a self‑regulation tool to help children manage anxiety or fear linked to the process.

Beyond being a resource for children, the app can also support caregivers and professionals: caregivers may use it to guide and support the child in preparing for a Barnahus visit; professionals (e.g. child‑liaison staff) can use it as a communication and information tool to help children understand the procedure and feel more secure.

Overall, the Journeys App aims to ensure that children navigating the justice and care systems are informed, prepared and supported, reducing uncertainty, anxiety, and the risk of additional trauma. As part of the broader Barnahus Network, it contributes to making legal procedures involving children more friendly, accessible and humane across Europe.

An online diagnostic platform to assess and prevent housing vulnerability and residential exclusion

VERA‑app is a digital tool to support efforts against housing exclusion and to improve access to decent, affordable housing in Spain. The platform emerged from the need to systematically assess vulnerability and risk factors faced by households when accessing or maintaining housing. By collecting and analysing data about socioeconomic, demographic and residential circumstances, VERA‑app helps identify households or situations at risk of exclusion, providing a structured, evidence‑based input for social intervention and policy planning.

The tool aims to offer a common diagnostic language and shared criteria among social services, public authorities, housing providers, and other stakeholders. This enables reliable tracking of vulnerability, easier communication between actors, and better-informed decisions. The introduction of VERA‑app is framed within a broader effort by Provivienda to respond to Spain’s growing housing emergency and structural difficulties related to affordability, access, and social inclusion.

Beyond diagnosis, VERA‑app supports follow-up and monitoring: it facilitates longitudinal tracking of individuals or households over time, allowing social organisations and public bodies to evaluate effectiveness of interventions, identify recurring risks, and adapt support strategies. The tool’s design draws on predictive statistical models and synthesizes extensive data and research about housing vulnerability.

By offering a transparent, accessible and shared diagnostic resource, VERA‑app contributes to redefining social housing practice, from reactive assistance to proactive prevention. It empowers social actors to detect risk early, promote equitable access to housing, and base interventions on credible data rather than ad‑hoc assessments.

A minimalist phone platform designed to offer essential connectivity while blocking addictive apps and digital distractions

Balance phone

Balance Phone offers a smartphone designed around the principles of digital minimalism and mindful use. Rather than providing full access to all apps and services, Balance Phone delivers a curated, distraction-free environment: social media, streaming services, games, gambling, pornography and other potentially addictive apps or websites are blocked.

The phone retains essential functions for modern life, such as messaging, music, digital banking, health, mobility, and other everyday utility apps, allowing users to maintain important connectivity while avoiding the pitfalls of endless scrolling or addictive content. The user interface is intentionally minimalistic, this design is meant to help users “regain control” over their time and attention.

Balance Phone started with an app for Android to help reduce screen time and addictive use, but developers found that many users could uninstall it and return to regular smartphone use. To make the change more stable and “irreversible,” they partnered with Samsung and launched a dedicated smartphone with the minimal, locked-down operating system pre-installed.

The initiative attracts people who want to reduce overuse of social media or addictive apps, including families seeking healthier tech habits for children or teens. It also appeals to adults who want a simpler, more intentional digital lifestyle. It serves as a broader response to increasing concern about digital addiction, mental health, and the impact of pervasive smartphone use. By combining essential phone features with strict content controls, the project proposes a middle path between basic feature phones and fully featured “always-online” smartphones, aiming to restore balance between connectivity and mental well-being.

Lokaal Signaal is an initiative aimed at strengthening local social policy by effectively capturing and utilizing insights from first-line professionals such as social workers, teachers, nurses, and volunteers. These individuals, often referred to as the “eyes and ears” of their communities, are in direct contact with vulnerable citizens and are well-positioned to identify recurring social issues.

The project provides these professionals with a user-friendly digital tool to report observed challenges, which are then aggregated and analyzed by local authorities and social organizations. This collaborative approach ensures that the insights lead to informed, timely interventions and the development of targeted actions to address systemic problems.

The project is also nominated for the Innovation Delivery Award at the European Social Services Awards, highlighting its potential impact on local social policy.

Be My Eyes is an accessibility platform that connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers and professional partners through live video calls. Using a free mobile app, users can request instant visual assistance for everyday tasks such as reading labels, navigating spaces, or identifying objects. A volunteer on the other end of the call sees through the user’s phone camera and provides real-time guidance, helping bridge the gap between visual information and fostering independent living.

Since its launch in 2015, Be My Eyes has built a vast, supportive community that harnesses technology to create meaningful human connections. The platform is free, and anonymous and its design is simple, ensuring users can receive help quickly and privately whenever needed.

Beyond volunteer assistance, Be My Eyes also partners with companies and organizations to enhance accessibility in workplaces and customer support. Through its Be My Eyes for Business and Be My Eyes for Work programs, the service allows employees and customers who are blind or have low vision to interact, via accessible video tools, directly with trained support agents . In 2023, the organization expanded its reach with Be My AI, an artificial intelligence assistant developed in collaboration with OpenAI, which provides instant, context-aware visual descriptions when human volunteers are unavailable.

Be My Eyes represents a transformative approach to inclusion, merging empathy, innovation, and global collaboration to make the world more accessible for all.

SimbiòTIC functions as a platform to promote the digitalization of social organizations by facilitating the adoption of SinergiaCRM, software specifically designed to manage relationships with users and other social agents. This system allows organizations to have a comprehensive view of each person and their interactions, providing updated information that facilitates decision-making and the planning of social interventions.

In addition, SinergiaCRM optimizes key processes such as fundraising, communication, direct care, and grant management, all from a single space, encouraging the systematization of information and its use to improve the social outcomes of organizations.

Through this system, SimbiòTIC aims not only to improve the internal management of organizations but also to move towards establishing a common framework for data exchange with other social agents and public administrations, facilitating collaboration and interoperability among different institutions.

The Social Work Way application is a digital tool designed for social work professionals, aiming to improve their daily practice and offer support in case management, continuous training, and decision-making. This application provides a unified platform where social workers can access up-to-date resources, innovative methodologies, and information on best practices in the field of social work. With this tool, professionals can manage cases, communicate with colleagues, and consult guides or manuals at any time and from anywhere.

In addition to providing access to case management tools, The Social Work Way includes features for professional development. The application offers online training, seminars, and updates on the latest trends in social work. This approach helps social workers stay up to date with regulatory changes and emerging methodologies, improving their ability to meet the needs of the people they work with.

Finally, The Social Work Way also allows professionals to share experiences and knowledge. Its internal social networking feature facilitates collaboration, enabling social workers to discuss cases, seek advice, and offer support to other professionals in the sector.

DiLoFácil, an app that makes reading easier for people with cognitive disabilities

App designed to make reading easier for people with cognitive disabilities or those who need support to understand written content.

Aplicació de suport a la lectura

DiLoFácil is a digital tool designed to make information more accessible to individuals with cognitive challenges or those who need reading support.

The app is easy to use: the user takes a photo of the text they want to understand better, and the app instantly provides an adapted version based on easy-to-read guidelines. This allows everyday information, like medical leaflets, user manuals, or official notices, to become clearer and more accessible.

The app is powered by an artificial intelligence system trained specifically to adapt texts based on principles of easy reading and cognitive accessibility. As the user continues to use DiLoFácil, the system learns the degree of simplification needed, the vocabulary that works best for the user, and the formats that enhance their comprehension. It also analyzes the context of the text to preserve its original meaning and avoid misunderstandings.
