A pioneering peer-support initiative in Catalonia offering lived-experience assistance for people with severe mental health conditions

Una iniciativa pionera de suport entre iguals a Catalunya que ofereix acompanyament basat en l’experiència viscuda per a persones amb trastorns greus de salut mental

The “Suport entre Iguals” project is designed to empower individuals with severe mental health conditions by offering support from peers who have undergone similar experiences. Built on the concept of the “Pacient Expert by Experience” model, the initiative seeks to transform how mental-health recovery is approached, shifting from purely professional-led support to lived-experience-driven connection. Through structured training and practice, the project trains participants who have experienced mental health challenges to act as supporters and guides to others in their recovery journeys.

The process begins with a cohort of around ten participants undergoing 160 hours of training, including theoretical content and practical placements within community rehabilitation services of the Institute of Healthcare (known as IAS). After this preparation phase, the peer-experts begin delivering a series of twelve‐session workshops to approximately one hundred users of the mental-health network in the Girona region. The topics covered include recovery skills, crisis prevention and management, creation of personal support networks, empowerment and self-determination.

The project situates itself within a wider regional model of community-based mental-health care and intends to reduce reliance on long-stay institutional settings. It also incorporates a digital monitoring component via messaging support and AI-enabled interaction to follow up on user needs and crisis risks. By acknowledging the value of lived experience and mutual support, the project emphasizes dignity, human rights, and community inclusion for people with psychosocial disabilities.

Be My Eyes, Inc.

A global accessibility platform that empowers blind and low-vision people through real-time visual assistance

Una plataforma d’accessibilitat global que empodera persones cegues i amb baixa visió mitjançant assistència visual en temps real

Be My Eyes is an accessibility platform that connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers and professional partners through live video calls. Using a free mobile app, users can request instant visual assistance for everyday tasks such as reading labels, navigating spaces, or identifying objects. A volunteer on the other end of the call sees through the user’s phone camera and provides real-time guidance, helping bridge the gap between visual information and fostering independent living.

Since its launch in 2015, Be My Eyes has built a vast, supportive community that harnesses technology to create meaningful human connections. The platform is free, and anonymous and its design is simple, ensuring users can receive help quickly and privately whenever needed.

Beyond volunteer assistance, Be My Eyes also partners with companies and organizations to enhance accessibility in workplaces and customer support. Through its Be My Eyes for Business and Be My Eyes for Work programs, the service allows employees and customers who are blind or have low vision to interact, via accessible video tools, directly with trained support agents . In 2023, the organization expanded its reach with Be My AI, an artificial intelligence assistant developed in collaboration with OpenAI, which provides instant, context-aware visual descriptions when human volunteers are unavailable.

Be My Eyes represents a transformative approach to inclusion, merging empathy, innovation, and global collaboration to make the world more accessible for all.

VinziRast-mittendrin, an inclusive social housing and community integration project in Vienna

VinziRast Vienna

A pioneering project that combines housing, employment, and education for formerly homeless individuals and students

VinziRast-mittendrin is an innovative social housing project in Vienna, established in 2013, that brings together formerly homeless individuals and university students in a shared living environment. The community is intentionally diverse, encompassing people from different life paths, cultural backgrounds, and age groups. This inclusive setting fosters trust, social integration, and personal development. The facility houses 26 residents across ten shared apartments, with two to three people per unit. Each apartment provides private bedrooms for personal retreat, while communal areas such as kitchens, living rooms, workshops, and a rooftop terrace offer spaces for social interaction and skill-building.

The project also incorporates an integrative gastronomic initiative, the VinziRast-Lokal mittendrin, where formerly homeless residents gain permanent employment and professional experience in the kitchen and service. They are supported by both staff and volunteers, and the menu emphasizes vegetarian and vegan dishes that reflect the cultural diversity of the team. Additional programs include VinziRast-Chance, which provides vocational training and language courses for people in the asylum process, and VinziRast am Land, a rural community project combining agricultural work with social integration.

VinziRast-mittendrin thrives on volunteer support and donations. Overall, the project emphasizes community living as a path to healing, empowerment, and social participation.

SoliVet, a service offering support to vulnerable people and their pets

SoliVet

Helping people and their pets stay together while accessing social support

Ajudant les persones i les seves mascotes a romandre juntes mentre accedeixen a recursos socials

SoliVet is an initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable people who live on the streets alongside their pets.

Often, having an animal makes it difficult to access shelters or social housing, forcing many people to choose between a roof over their heads or staying on the streets with their pet. SoliVet works to ensure that these individuals can access various social resources without having to be separated from their animals.

The organization takes a holistic approach, addressing multiple areas of intervention. On one hand, it provides specialized training for social service staff so they can better assist and support people with animals. On the other hand, it ensures veterinary care for animals housed in the centers, maintaining their health and proper sanitary conditions.

Additionally, since January 2024, SoliVet has launched Paw’sitive Job, the first charitable canine residence linked to a socio-labor integration workshop. This pioneering project combines animal care with training and employment opportunities for people in vulnerable situations.

SocialTV turns any TV into an easy-to-use tool for calls, reminders, and interactive content

SocialTV converteix qualsevol televisor en una eina fàcil d’utilitzar per a trucades, recordatoris i contingut interactiu

SocialTV is a technological tool that brings physical, psychological, and emotional care to the elderly through the television, an accessible device that is part of their daily lives. The tool leverages this channel to provide personalized care without requiring prior technological knowledge or the need to leave home.

The system connects the elderly person, their family members, and the social professionals from the municipality or organization that runs the initiative. Professionals can schedule regular video calls, manage personalized content, and conduct workshops to promote the emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being of the users. At the same time, family members can collaborate by sharing audiovisual memories and helping organize the user’s agenda.

SocialTV improves the quality of life of elderly people and promotes closer, more personalized care with the aim of combating unwanted loneliness. Thanks to its ease of use and person-centered approach, it promotes digital inclusion and the overall well-being of the elderly.

Plataforma que impulsa la digitalització de les entitats socials i optimitza els processos

SimbiòTIC functions as a platform to promote the digitalization of social organizations by facilitating the adoption of SinergiaCRM, software specifically designed to manage relationships with users and other social agents. This system allows organizations to have a comprehensive view of each person and their interactions, providing updated information that facilitates decision-making and the planning of social interventions.

In addition, SinergiaCRM optimizes key processes such as fundraising, communication, direct care, and grant management, all from a single space, encouraging the systematization of information and its use to improve the social outcomes of organizations.

Through this system, SimbiòTIC aims not only to improve the internal management of organizations but also to move towards establishing a common framework for data exchange with other social agents and public administrations, facilitating collaboration and interoperability among different institutions.

Clubs de lectura fàcil per fomentar l’accessibilitat de la cultura

The Ampans reading clubs are weekly meetings where groups of people with different reading abilities read aloud and share impressions about easy-to-read books. This method, which follows a set of guidelines and recommendations related to text writing and design, aims to make information accessible to people with reading comprehension difficulties. In this sense, some sentences are simplified, and comparisons or metaphors that could create confusion are avoided.

The project is part of the “Network of Easy Reading and Cognitive Accessibility Clubs” program. Beyond the clubs, training activities related to accessibility in libraries and other culture-related initiatives have been carried out. A working group has also been created, made up of a multidisciplinary team that works to promote cognitive accessibility in the community.

Neatebox

Application aimed at making visits to venues more accessible for people with disabilities

WelcoMe, aplicació que facilita les visites de les persones amb discapacitat als establiments

The operation of WelcoME is very intuitive. First, the user must create a profile, where they specify their disability and impairments, with up to 30 options available. However, if they prefer, they can keep this information confidential. In addition, they are also asked to indicate the specific services they require once they arrive at the venue, such as accessible restrooms or parking.

Once the profile is set up, the visit planning process can begin. Through a search tool, the user can see which spaces are registered in the WelcoMe network. Once the location is chosen, the application requests details about the appointment, such as the date and time or specific needs. Upon arrival, the staff receives a notification of the client’s arrival.

The platform sends the company and its staff all the information about the user, as well as tips and links on how to interact appropriately in each case. This not only facilitates a more comfortable experience for the person with a disability but also allows venues to proactively adapt and provide a more welcoming and respectful service.
