A predictive tool of needs and situations of vulnerability and inequality of the population that, based on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence algorithms, makes it possible to describe the socio-demographic and economic characteristics of families in the territory with the aim of helping municipal social services to better understand current real needs, predict future needs, size the portfolio of services and plan resources.

The tool has been applied for the first time in the neighbourhoods of the municipalities of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Premià de Mar and Mollet del Vallés, and has enabled a better understanding of the impact of Covid on the most vulnerable population, with the participation of the social services, basic information management and open government teams of these three municipalities.

Momentum Analytics, together with the Asociación Bienestar y Desarrollo ABD, after years of developing the solution and talking to all the actors in the sector – central and regional governments, town councils, provincial councils, county councils, the third sector, foundations, associations, NGOs, energy companies, water companies – have crystallized the project with the implementation in these first three municipalities.

According to the expert Dr. Josep Maria Picas, “we are at the beginning of a project that will be fascinating, based on the information from the data of the social services of the town councils which, together with other community services such as health, will allow our assistance to the population to be unbeatable. We have a great opportunity”.

The Sant Pere Claver Social Services Foundation becomes member of iSocial

The Board of the Sant Pere Claver Social Services Foundation has approved becoming an iSocial member. With this new addition, there are already 12 member social organisations of iSocial, adding founders and collaborating partners.

Sant Pere Claver Serveis Socials is a foundation of the Sant Pere Claver Group, created in 2011 to promote and strengthen the Group’s activity in the social sector. It manages residential services, day centers and community services (support for autonomy in one’s own home, inclusive housing, support for youngsters after guardianship, social club, legal defense of the mentally ill, etc.). It has more than 50 multidisciplinary professionals.

The Sant Pere Claver Social Services Foundation has been, since 2019, one of the social entities driving the FLAPP project! of the iSocial Foundation, and numerous professionals and adolescents from the centers and services for minors under guardianship and ex-guardianship that it manages have participated in the co-creation workshops of this digital platform and in the pilot tests to experiment and evaluate it.

At the same time, the Sant Pere Claver Social Services Foundation participates in the NIDUS project of the iSocial Foundation, which will develop a digital platform for the homeless and for the professionals who care for and accompany them.

We have launched the NIDUS project, a digital platform that will improve care services for the homeless

The kick-off meeting of the NIDUS project took place today at the headquarters of the iSocial Foundation in Barcelona, which will develop a platform of digital tools for the homeless and for the social professionals who support and accompany them.

The new NIDUS service, promoted by iSocial, will include a digital platform, accessible from mobile phones and computers, which will offer homeless people a package of technological tools that will make it easier for them to improve their living conditions and their reintegration process into society: a “digital safe” that will allow them to store their documentation in the cloud; a chat system to be able to easily communicate with social professionals who offer them follow-up and support; a map of points of interest, services and resources that can meet your needs; or a system of notifications to receive notices from social NGO and municipal services that support them.

The meeting was attended by professionals responsible for homelessness of four iSocial member entities that will participate in the project (ABD, ATRA Group, Support-Girona and Sant Pere Claver Foundation) and four technicians from the company Multiplica, specialized in the design of digital solutions and mobile technology. In the first phase that has been launched today, there will also be workshops and interviews with homeless people and social professionals, and meetings with three city councils that will collaborate in the project: Barcelona City Council, Girona City Council and City Council of El Prat de Llobregat. Once the digital tools of the new NIDUS service have been developed, it will be experimented with fifty homeless people from these three municipalities, with the support of the municipal social services and the four NGO mentioned.

The NIDUS project was born mainly to respond to the serious problem of the loss of documentation that usually affects homeless people, and the situations of anxiety and mental health disorders that arise from it, as well as the bureaucratic overload that this generates to the social professionals who take care of them. The project is based on the finding that today more than 80% of homeless people in Catalonia have a smartphone, that other international projects have demonstrated the benefits of secure cloud storage of their personal documentation, and that free existing tools for the cloud storage are not suitable for their profile and needs. The storage tool that will be created will be complemented with other digital tools that contribute to improving the living conditions of homeless people and the support work carried out by social professionals, and help their reintegration into society.

It is estimated that in Catalonia there are 53,118 people who suffer from a situation of homelessness, of which 5,571 people live on the streets directly or spend the night in hostels but have to spend the rest of the day on the streets. In the city of Barcelona, the number of homeless people sleeping in public and private resources that exist in the city has doubled in 12 years, and the number of people living in settlements has grown by 93% since 2015.

A programme to escape from the welfare-based approach to food aid. It offers community kitchens and workshops where people who receive food can also learn how to optimize their food, prepare healthy dishes and extend food preservation. This promotes the right to decent, sustainable and healthy food among people in a situation of food vulnerability.

Each Espai Alimenta is located in a different area of the city and managed by a social organization. The aim is not only to offer a space to meet needs, but the programme also seeks to enable people in need of food aid to create a community bond and exchange knowledge.

Residential complex with 105 people suffering from Alzheimer’s with a high degree of independence.

It is a small village designed exclusively to allow people with this disease to live autonomously, away from socio-sanitary centres and without the constant support of their relatives. Each inhabitant pays 24,000 euros per year and lives in a family-like house, despite sharing with other residents common spaces such as shops and a theater room. Sociosanitary care, on the other hand, is guaranteed by a group of professionals working there, as well as volunteers working in activities to promote the socialization of the residents.

The village is also a resource center for medical and therapeutic research, as studies are conducted there to assess the results and impacts of this innovative residential model.

Online community of 10,000 people worldwide who voluntarily use their 3D printers to create hand and arm prostheses for adults and children who need it.

Individuals and organizations who wish to collaborate with the cause access the web to find users from more than 100 countries who need a prosthetic and have posted photographs showing and explaining the required prosthetic. The voluntary, then, contacts this person, downloads all the necessary information from the website, and adapts the available designs, which are in open source and free of rights, to the specific need of the person who will benefit. Once the prosthesis is printed, the voluntary person disinterestedly forwards it to the final beneficiary, who often lives in another country or continent.

In this way, through domestic manufacturing technology, people with low resources who cannot access a prosthetic because of their high price and/or the need to adapt them to children’s growth can have a free and customised prosthetic.
As an online portal, each can connect with people demanding from all over the world, although also can easily find plaintiffs living nearby and deliver the prosthetic to them personally.

Artificial Intelligence tool to support primary care professionals for social services. Analyzes cases and advises the professional workers to respond to the attended people. The primary care worker who serves a visit, after transcribing on the computer his notes about the most important person in the interview, pressing a button obtains in a few seconds from the DPR system (Requires, Problems, Resources in catalan) a recommendation on the response to give or the action to be undertaken.

DPR processes the annotations of the social worker, classifies the problem and the person’s request, and suggests to the professional the answer to give, according to the resources and services the institution can offer or advise. This “intelligent” system allows social professionals to respond more quickly, more safely and objectively to the user, and users to receive a clear diagnosis with high accuracy reliability.

This tool that automatizes the process of typifying the demands received by social service centers has been trained using machine learning techniques from the data of 300,000 interviews conducted by the social services of Barcelona City Council in previous years.

The DPR system is thus a tool of “collective intelligence”, which does not replace the decisions of social professionals, but provides them with guidance based on the collective experience of previous years and leaves the final decision on the response to each case or situation in their hands.

It is a pioneer tool in Spain which, in addition to supporting decision-making and providing guidance to professionals, makes it possible to improve the planning of resources and services of the administration.

Service that makes automated calls to vulnerable people who are in their home and cannot attend social and health care centres on a regular basis or cannot receive close attention.

When a person who needs to be cared for is detected, the person receives an automated call with a voice from a real person, who asks him about his welfare state and possible needs. If the user needs to receive home care or if someone makes the purchase, for example, the system passes the call to a professional to specify the response to their demand.

This service used artificial intelligence techniques and was implemented in 2020 in the face of the inability of the Hampshire (England) government to monitor carefully and consistently vulnerable people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the need to quickly contact thousands of people who were isolated in their homes, the PA Consulting company developed this massive, automated contact system to cater for and fuel a large volume of calls.

Coordinadora Mentoria Social, comprised of 11 partner entities and 8 member entities, brings into contact mentors with people at risk of social exclusion, mainly young people. With the aim of ensuring social cohesion and equal opportunities, the mentor is a voluntary person who is assigned a person to offer him or her their knowledge and experience.

In this way, both people share a few hours a week that enable mentoring to overcome labor, social, academic, etc. due to mentoring support and guidance.
